Stellantis N.V. unveiled the STLA Large, an all-new, highly flexible, battery electric vehicle (BEV)-native platform that will be the foundation for a diverse range of upcoming vehicles.

The STLA Large platform features embedded energy, charging efficiency and superior vehicle dynamics, and also supports Trail Rated off-road driving.

Stellantis plans to deploy this technology in North America, focusing on the Dodge and Jeep brands, with subsequent rollouts to include Alfa Romeo, Chrysler and Maserati. Between 2024 and 2026, the company anticipates launching eight vehicles based on this platform.

“Our goals for our STLA platforms are ambitious, but this is what our customers need from us today," said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis.

The STLA Large platform enables a high level of vehicle diversity by leveraging a base set of components. This approach also facilitates cost-efficient manufacturing processes, which can be replicated across multiple assembly plants. The upcoming products will cover a full spectrum of vehicle types, ranging from cars to crossovers to SUVs. Each vehicle will offer the electric propulsion benefits of instant torque response and zero emissions.

The STLA Large platform is flexible, allowing for adjustments in wheelbase, overall length, width, height and ground clearance. It accommodates a variety of suspension modules and powertrain cradles, tailored to specific vehicle performance objectives. Advanced high-strength materials optimize the platform for weight and rigidity, enabling performance across various vehicle types.

In terms of propulsion, STLA Large supports both 400-volt and 800-volt electric architectures. It features three-in-one electric drive modules (EDMs) that incorporate the motor, power inverter and gear reduction, configurable in various layouts including front-wheel, rear-wheel and all-wheel drive. The flexibility extends to supporting hybrid and internal combustion propulsion systems.

Addressing the crucial aspect of driving range and cost, STLA Large includes battery pack options ranging from 85 to 118 kilowatt-hours (kWh), targeting an overall range of up to 500 miles for sedans. It is also engineered to accept future energy storage technologies as they become production-ready.

The initial generation of propulsion components on the STLA Large platform will deliver quick acceleration, with the potential of reaching 0-60 mph in around 2 seconds. Additionally, fast charging capabilities will significantly enhance the user experience.
