Automakers on July 3 began releasing strong new-vehicle sales results for the month of June, the second three-month quarter and the first six months of the year.
Honda
American Honda overcame industrywide logistics issues to post a fourth straight sales month over 110,000 units.
Honda brand sales increased more than 40% in 2Q, to 347,025 vehicles, and 54% in June, to 98,327 vehicles, with turn rates over 70%.
Sales of Honda electrified models set an all-time annual record of 137,437 vehicles in just six months, with CR-V and Accord hybrid-electric models combining for another new monthly record of 26,522 vehicles in June.
The all-new CR-V reached 30,000 units for the fourth straight month, the all-new Pilot hit 10,000 units for the second straight month, and the HR-V continued strong sales of 9,136 for June despite industrywide transportation issues.
Acura brand June sales topped 13,000 units for the fourth straight month---the first time the brand did so since 2021.
The Acura Integra topped 2,500 units in sales for the fifth straight month and continued to lead the luxury gateway segment.
The Acura RDX logged its best month of 2023, selling 3,502 units. Combined with the MDX's sales of 5,048 units, Acura SUVs topped 8,500 in June sales.
Subaru
Subaru of America, Inc. (SOA) reported sales of 55,168 vehicles for June 2023, a 28% increase compared with June 2022 (43,175). SOA also reported year-to-date sales of 304,092, a 15% increase compared with the same period in 2022.
In June, Outback was the top performer by volume with 16,225 vehicle sales. BRZ sales for June 2023 increased 98% over the same month in 2022, while WRX posted a 59% increase in June. Impreza sales for June 2023 increased 39%, and Forester sales increased 34% compared to June 2022. Year to date, WRX posted a 148% increase, while the BRZ carline posted an increase of 51% compared to the same period in 2022.
Toyota
Toyota Motor North America (TMNA) reported U.S. sales in June of 195,448 vehicles, up 14.9% on a volume and daily selling rate (DSR) basis versus June 2022. June sales of electrified vehicles totaled 51,535, representing 26.4% of total monthly sales.
For the first half of 2023, TMNA reported U.S. sales of 1,038,520 vehicles, down 0.7% on a volume and DSR basis. First half electrified vehicle sales totaled 270,476, representing 26% of total year-to-date sales.
Toyota division posted June sales of 168,680 vehicles, up 14.4% on a volume and DSR basis. For the first half of 2023, Toyota division reported sales of 889,108 vehicles, down 2.8% on a volume and DSR basis.
Lexus division posted June sales of 26,768 vehicles, up 18.1% on a volume and DSR basis. For the first half of 2023, Lexus division reported sales of 149,412 vehicles, up 14% on a volume and DSR basis.
Kia
Continuing momentum from 2022's record retail sales, Kia America set an all-time first half volume record of 394,333 vehicles, up 18% over the first half of 2022. Kia's retail-only sales total for the past six months was 362,933, an increase of 17% over the first half of 2022. Kia closed the month of June with 70,495 total units, an 8% increase over the same period last year, marking the 11th straight month of year-over-year sales growth.
Eight Kia models posted year-over-year sales increases in the first half, including: Carnival (+74%); Seltos (+64%); Sportage (+37%); Soul (+26%); Forte (+20%); Telluride (+18%); Sorento (+10%) and Niro (+9%). In addition, sales of Kia's electrified models increased by 40% and sales of Kia's SUVs increased by 25% over the first six months of last year.
Hyundai
Hyundai Motor America reported total June sales of 69,351 units, a 10% increase compared with June 2022. Hyundai set best-ever total sales in June for Elantra HEV (+227%), Elantra N (+27%), IONIQ 5 (+10%), Santa Fe PHEV (+9%), Santa Fe HEV (+280%), Tucson PHEV (+84%), Tucson HEV (+37%), Santa Cruz (+4%) and Kona EV (+239%).
Hyundai sold 61,991 retail units in June, a slight 2% decrease compared to June 2022. Hyundai set best-ever retail sales in June for Elantra HEV, Elantra N, IONIQ 5, Santa Fe PHEV, Santa Fe, HEV, Tucson, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV and Santa Cruz. Hyundai Green sales represented 20% of retail volume and an increase of 53% year-over-year. SUVs represented 74% of the retail mix.
In Q2, Hyundai sold 210,164 units (+14%) and 394,613 vehicles in the first half (+15%). All-time best Q2 records were set for Elantra HEV, Elantra N, IONIQ 5, Santa Fe PHEV, Santa Fe HEV, Tucson PHEV, Tucson HEV, Santa Cruz and Kona EV. Fleet sales represented 9% of total volume in Q2.
FCA
FCA US LLC reported sales of 434,648 vehicles in the second quarter of 2023. Overall, total U.S. sales for the second quarter increased 6% versus the same period last year.
The Ram brand total U.S. sales increased 3% over the same period last year. The Ram brand's ProMaster van saw its best-ever quarter in both total and retail U.S. sales, increasing 27% and 58% respectively over the same period last year. The Ram ProMaster City increased 2% versus the same quarter last year.
The Ram brand's Commercial fleet channel's total U.S. sales increased 19% versus the same period last year.
The Jeep Wrangler 4xe, which notched its best-ever quarter to date, saw total sales of the vehicle increase 56% versus the same period last year. Jeep Wrangler 4xe is America's best-selling plug-in hybrid vehicle, followed by the Grand Cherokee 4xe at No. 2. The Jeep Wrangler 4xe accounted for 36% (16,949 units) of total Wrangler sales in the second quarter. The Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe accounted for 15% (10,761 units) of total Grand Cherokee sales in the second quarter.
The Jeep Compass (up 28%) and Jeep Grand Cherokee (up 19%) posted total U.S. sales gains over the same quarter last year.
The Chrysler brand's total U.S. sales recorded growth of 33% versus the same quarter last year. The Chrysler Pacifica drove the gains, up 40% in total U.S. sales versus Q2 2022. Total U.S. sales of the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, which holds the No. 4 spot among the top-selling PHEVs in the U.S., increased 112% over the same period last year. The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid accounted for 19% (8,763 units) of the nameplate's total sales in the second quarter.
Deliveries of the limited edition 2023 Chrysler 300C, revealed at last year's Detroit Auto Show, began in the second quarter.
The Dodge brand's total U.S. sales increased 37%, with the Charger up 7% and Durango up 223% in total sales versus the same quarter last year. The Dodge Hornet G/T is in dealerships now and the Dodge Hornet R/T will begin arriving at dealerships in early Q3. The all-new Dodge Hornet, unlocking the gateway to Dodge muscle, offers the quickest, fastest, most powerful compact utility vehicle under $30,000, bringing buzz to the segment with unmistakable Dodge styling cues and performance.
The 2024 Alfa Romeo Tonale, manufactured at the Pomigliano d'Arco plant in Naples, Italy, is shipping to dealerships now. The Tonale enters the premium compact CUV segment with standard all-wheel drive, more than 30 miles of electric range and a starting U.S. MSRP of $42,995.
Mitsubishi
Mitsubishi Motors North America (MMNA) reported second quarter 2023 sales of 24,602, an increase of 12.5% over the same period in 2022. Stock levels of the brand's SUVs began to match consumer demand through the quarter, with Mirage availability expected to increase in the coming months.
Outlander and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid led the way in sales performance as both vehicles posted best-ever quarterly results, Outlander up 40% over the same period last year with 14,368 sales and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid up nearly 300% with 1,620 sales. Both vehicles posted increases on a year-to-date basis too, Outlander up 4% and Outlander Plug-in Hybrid up 186%. Also posting strong results as volume begins to build was Eclipse Cross, up 61% over Q2 2022 with 2,761 sales. This increased availability saw Eclipse Cross sales increasing month by month through the quarter.
MMNA's overall Q2 results represented the best sales performance since Q1 2022. Mitsubishi Motors Corporation continues to focus on increased production for the U.S. market, and increased availability of the brand's SUVs---though even greater supply would have driven larger sales numbers---drove this overall performance. As vehicles drop out of the subcompact car segment, demand for the affordable, efficient Mirage remains high, and the expectation is that availability will rebound in coming months.
Mazda
Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) reported total June sales of 29,786 vehicles, an increase of 96.9% compared to June 2022. Year-to-date sales totaled 183,783 vehicles, an increase of 28.7% compared to the same time last year. With 26 selling days in June, compared to the same the year prior, the company posted an increase of 96.9% on a Daily Selling Rate (DSR) basis.
CPO sales totaled 5,219 vehicles in June, an increase of 27% compared to June 2022.
Rivian
Rivian Automotive, Inc. announced it produced 13,992 vehicles at its manufacturing facility in Normal, IL, and delivered 12,640 vehicles during the same period in the second quarter ending June 30.
These figures remain in line with the company’s expectations, and it believes it is on track to deliver on the 50,000 annual production guidance previously provided.
Nikola
Nikola Corporation announced its quarterly deliveries for its battery-electric truck, with wholesale of 45 trucks and retail of 66 trucks in the quarter ended June 30.
Nikola continues its refocused plan of concentration on the North American market, reducing costs and producing the highest-quality Class 8 zero-emission trucks available today.
Porsche
Porsche Cars North America, Inc. (PCNA) announced second-quarter retail deliveries in the U.S. totaled 18,895 cars to contribute to an all-time record for PCNA for the first six months of the year of 36,335 cars---a rise of 12% during this period. This performance was despite model cycle changes and supply restrictions contributing to a 3% decline in sales in the second quarter compared to the same period in 2022.
In the 75th year of the Porsche sports car, Porsche Cars North America continued to inspire customers through not only its current lineup of cars but also with exciting new additions. The quarter saw the launch of the new Cayenne to critical acclaim, with the first cars delivered to customers in June.
The year’s performance was led by the Macan---up 34% for the year to date---and the 911 and 718 two-door sports cars, with gains of 9% and 31% respectively over the same time period in 2022. By the same measure, the Panamera posted a 6% gain over the first six months of the year and the Cayenne a 4% gain, while June was the best month of the year yet for the Taycan with 667 sales as supply increases.
Porsche Approved Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) sales in the U.S. totaled 9,675 vehicles in the second quarter of 2023, up 23.3% from the same quarter in 2022.
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) reported Q2 2023 sales of 77,287 Mercedes-Benz models. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz Vans reported Q2 2023 sales of 18,732 units, bringing MBUSA to a total of 96,109 vehicles for the quarter. MBUSA has introduced five electric vehicles (EQ) in the Mercedes-Benz electric line-up, including EQS Sedan, EQS SUV, EQB, EQE Sedan and the EQE SUV. Strong, sustained demand for EQ and top-end vehicles propelled Q2 top-end growth of 40% for a total of 26,927 vehicles.
Sales in the top-end segment rose to 26,927 units, an increase of 40% in Q2 2023 compared to Q2 2022. Sales for Mercedes-AMG high-performance models totalled 11,835 units, an increase of 66% versus Q2 2022. Demand for the G-Class remains consistently high with sales up 553% from the comparable quarter in 2022, with 3,088 units. The fully electric EQS SUV posted 3,077 units in Q2 2023, while the EQS Sedan saw a 25% increase from Q2 2022 with 2,456 units.
Sales in the core segment reached 38,470 units. The CLA saw an increase of 30% compared to Q2 2022 with 2,521 units sold. The C-Class held strong with 8,623 units sold in Q2 2023. The fully-electric EQE Sedan attracted 1,682 new customers in Q2 2023.
Sales in the entry segment reached 11,890 units. Released in summer 2022, the fully electric EQB recorded 1,867 unit sales. The GLA saw strong demand in Q2 2023 with 5,071 units sold, an increase of 47% to the comparable quarter last year.
Separately, Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) models recorded sales of 35,031 vehicles during the first quarter of 2023, an increase of 6% versus Q2 2022.
