Volkswagen announced a recall of more than 123,000 vehicles across multiple models due to a critical safety defect in Takata airbags. The issue involves the driver's side frontal airbag inflator, which could explode upon deployment because of unstable propellant, posing a significant risk to drivers.

The recall affects the 2017-2019 Beetle and Beetle Convertible, 2012-2014 Passat, 2017 Passat Wagon, and 2006-2007 Passat Sedan models. Volkswagen said it will start mailing recall notification letters to owners Dec. 27.

According to the automaker, dealers will replace the driver's side front airbag modules free of charge to ensure safety compliance.

The defect stems from the Takata airbag inflators, a long-standing issue that has affected multiple automakers globally, resulting in widespread recalls. The defect has been linked to incidents where airbags exploded during deployment, causing injuries and fatalities.
