Honda has issued a recall for 780,000 vehicles across North America, citing concerns about high-pressure fuel pump defects that could result in fuel leaks and increase the risk of fire. The recall affects several models, including the Accord, CR-V Hybrid and Civic vehicles from model years 2023 through 2025.
In a statement to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Honda explained the defect stems from cracks that may develop inside the high-pressure fuel pump core during regular driving. These cracks could grow over time, potentially leading to fuel leaks or a noticeable fuel odor, particularly when the vehicle is idling.
"This issue could significantly heighten the risk of a fire if the leaked fuel encounters an ignition source," Honda said.
Of the recalled vehicles, 720,000 are located in the U.S., while about 61,000 are in Canada. Honda dealerships will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the defective fuel pumps with improved parts as needed.
Although there have been 145 warranty claims related to the issue, the automaker confirmed that no injuries have been reported. Honda said it identified the fuel leak and associated odor in September and immediately halted the shipment of affected vehicles.
The company urges owners of the impacted models to contact their local dealer for inspection and replacement, ensuring the defect is addressed promptly and safely.
