General Motors is expanding its use of artificial intelligence across its global manufacturing ecosystem, aiming to improve workplace safety, product quality and production efficiency while reinforcing its leadership in U.S. vehicle sales.
In a recent announcement, the automaker outlined how AI-enabled systems -- such as digital twins, machine learning diagnostics, and proprietary robotics tools -- are driving improvements across its production facilities. GM, which retained its position as the U.S. sales leader for the third straight year in 2024, credited its mix of electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles and its flexible manufacturing approach for this continued momentum.
“GM is leveraging AI technology to enhance safety, improve quality, and enable efficiency in our manufacturing facilities,” the company said in a press release. “We build solutions like the ones below in-house, allowing us to adapt swiftly and minimize downtime.”
One of the most impactful tools is GM’s use of digital twins -- virtual simulations of physical production lines -- which allow teams to optimize planning before physical construction begins. This approach, the company said, helps reduce time and costs while improving operational readiness.
The automaker is also deploying AI and machine learning to inspect battery packs for potential leaks, enabling quicker repairs and reinforcing product safety. Meanwhile, robotics paired with GM’s proprietary AI tools are being used to assess welds and paint finishes, identifying anomalies that could impact vehicle quality.
In addition to its focus on product excellence, GM emphasized that its AI adoption supports its workforce. “GM is a people-centric employer -- we’re using AI and advanced software to help our team minimize ergonomic stressors, enable workplace safety and enhance quality in our manufacturing plants,” the company stated.
By investing in both technology and training, GM says it’s preparing its workforce for a more advanced production environment while maintaining flexibility and responsiveness to customer demand. “Our winning formula is driven by a combination of flexible manufacturing, advanced technology, and a talented workforce,” the press release concluded.
GM currently offers the broadest electric vehicle portfolio in the industry, with plans to expand to a dozen EV models by the end of 2025.
