Ford Motor Co. has issued a recall for 272,817 vehicles in the U.S. over concerns that battery degradation could lead to power failure, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The recall affects certain 2021-2023 Bronco Sport and 2022-2023 Maverick models. The NHTSA reported the 12-volt battery in these vehicles may deteriorate and fail unexpectedly, potentially disabling critical electrical accessories such as hazard lights or, in more severe cases, causing a total loss of drive power, increasing the risk of collisions.

To address the issue, Ford dealers will inspect the affected vehicles and replace the battery if necessary at no cost to owners.

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed Feb. 3. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S02.

Vehicles in this recall were previously repaired under 24V-267 and will need to have the new remedy completed.
