Tesla Recalls 1.8 Million Vehicles for Hood Latch Issue

Tesla has issued a software update and will start mailing recall letters to affected owners in September.

Tesla has issued a recall for more than 1.8 million vehicles worldwide due to a defect in the hood latch assemblies that may prevent drivers from being alerted if the hood is unlatched. The recall impacts 2021-2024 Model 3, Model S and Model X vehicles, and 2020-2024 Model Y vehicles.

A driver who shifts into DRIVE won't be warned the hood is unlatched.

The main issue, as identified by Tesla engineers, lies in the deformation of the latch switch, which has shown to be more severe in China compared to the U.S. and Europe. Tesla began receiving complaints from Model 3 and Model Y owners in China in March, highlighting a geographical disparity in the occurrence of the defect.

There have been no reported crashes or injuries related to the defect in the U.S., with only three warranty claims or field reports received.

To address the issue, Tesla has already initiated an over-the-air (OTA) software update. Starting June 18, affected vehicles began receiving firmware release 2024.20.3, aimed at mitigating the defect.

Tesla will also mail recall letters to affected vehicle owners starting Sept. 24. Owners with concerns or seeking further information can contact Tesla at 877-798-3752 and reference recall number SB-24-00-012.
