Using recycled automotive parts instead of newly manufactured ones can lead to significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, according to a study conducted at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and released by the Automotive Recyclers Association (ARA).

The year-long study, which began in 2023, analyzed 10 commonly replaced vehicle parts from sedans, SUVs and pickup trucks. Researchers quantified the energy required to produce each part and the associated emissions, comparing new parts to their recycled counterparts.

The study confirmed what many professional recyclers have long advocated -- using recycled OE parts is both cost-effective and environmentally responsible.

“We are thrilled to release the results of this year-long study to the public,” said ARA Executive Director Vince Edivan. “ARA members know the impact their businesses have on the environment through their day-to-day operations. Now we have quantifiable data to illustrate just how big of an environmental impact automotive recyclers have.”

The study examined key components such as engines, transmissions, bumpers, headlights and doors. The findings provide valuable data for businesses and policymakers working toward carbon neutrality goals.

“This information will help companies and communities make more informed decisions when enacting their carbon neutrality goals,” said ARA President Eric Wilbert. “ARA looks forward to more effectively telling the story to consumers, policymakers and other stakeholders about the automotive recycling industry’s critical impact on the environment now that we have this hard data.”

For a complete breakdown of the findings, including the greenhouse gas emissions saved for 30 specific parts, the full report is available through ARA.
