SK On and Nissan announced a new battery supply agreement that will provide nearly 100 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of high-nickel batteries for Nissan’s next-generation EVs in North America.

Under the agreement, SK On will supply the batteries from 2028 through 2033 to power Nissan vehicles produced at its Canton, MS, assembly plant. The U.S.-manufactured batteries are intended to enhance Nissan’s electrification efforts and contribute to the domestic supply chain.

“This agreement with SK On is a significant milestone for Nissan’s electrification journey and supports further investment in U.S. manufacturing,” said Christian Meunier, chairman, Nissan Americas. “Through this smart partnership with SK On, we can leverage their growing U.S. production capacity to deliver innovative, high-quality electric vehicles that meet the needs of our customers.”

The partnership is expected to support approximately 1,700 U.S. jobs at SK On and includes a $661 million investment in equipment and related infrastructure. This adds to Nissan’s previously announced $500 million investment in its Canton facility for EV production.

Importantly, this marks SK On’s first supply agreement with a Japanese automaker. SK On, a subsidiary of South Korea’s SK Group, currently operates two battery plants in the U.S. and is building four more. Once operational, the company’s annual U.S. battery production capacity is projected to exceed 180GWh.

“This agreement underscores the strength of our battery technology and our growing presence in the North American market,” said Seok-hee Lee, SK On president and CEO. “Leveraging our production footprint and expertise, we are committed to supporting Nissan’s electrification strategy and the broader transition to sustainable mobility.”

Nissan is accelerating its EV roadmap as part of its global long-term vision. The automaker plans to launch 30 new models over the next three years, including 16 electrified vehicles. Among these are all-new EVs slated for production in Canton beginning in 2028.
