Rivian-VW Joint Venture Attracts Interest from Other Automakers

The architecture being developed as part of the deal is expected to significantly reduce the complexity of vehicle electronics, positioning it to possibly become a preferred platform.

Even before the results of the Rivian-Volkswagen partnership materialize, other automakers are showing interest in Rivian’s next-generation vehicle architecture, according to Rivian Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid. The announcement follows VW’s decision to invest $5.8 billion in a joint venture to integrate Rivian’s software technology into its future models.

“Obviously, other OEMs are talking to us, and we’re trying to figure out how to support that in the future,” Bensaid told Reuters. “Any other OEM who wants to make a leap from a technology standpoint, the joint venture today becomes one of the key partners with whom they can make that collaboration. I’d say that many other OEMs are knocking on our door.”

Industry analysts suggest Rivian’s electrical system could become a preferred platform for Western automakers, excluding Tesla, as manufacturers seek cost-effective alternatives to developing proprietary EV technology.

The system is expected to significantly reduce the complexity of vehicle electronics. Current VW models use up to 100 control units, whereas Rivian’s platform consolidates these into just seven, integrating semiconductors, sensors, and cabling to manage everything from infotainment to advanced driver assistance systems.

Among the first VW Group vehicles expected to adopt the new architecture are Porsche’s upcoming flagship SUV and the next-generation VW Golf. The technology could help automakers streamline development, cut costs and accelerate the transition to software-driven EVs.

While Bensaid did not disclose which manufacturers are in discussions with Rivian, licensing the platform could provide a critical revenue stream for the EV startup as it continues working toward profitability. The move would also further solidify Rivian’s role in shaping the future of automotive software innovation.
