Students at SUN Technical Institute’s collision repair technology program in New Berlin, PA, are turning small-scale vehicles into big opportunities.
Seven teams have spent months transforming pedal car kits into uniquely designed models, which will be displayed and auctioned at the Spring Carlisle Collector Car Auction on April 24–25. The proceeds will directly support the school’s automotive program, providing essential resources for future students.
The project began in late 2024, with students designing, fabricating and painting their pedal cars. Four teams created versions of the 1955 Chevrolet, while three others designed Ford Roadsters. Each team took a basic kit and customized it with distinctive designs, body work and paint.
Before they reach the auction block, the finished pedal cars will be exhibited at the AACA Museum, Inc., in Hershey for two months, giving the students’ work added visibility.
“This means investing in youth and sharing our passion with them,” said Tony Cline, director of auction operations at Carlisle Auctions. “When Mr. Reeder proposed his idea, we were thrilled to support it… What began as a small initiative has grown significantly, involving students beyond Mr. Reeder’s class.”
John Reeder, collision repair technology instructor at SUN Technical Institute, emphasized the impact of the partnership.
“I reached out with a small idea, and their team has taken it to a whole new level,” Reeder said. “In fact, it’s been so popular at the school that students from outside of my collision repair class have been able to participate.”
Beyond the auction, students will immerse themselves in the broader automotive industry by attending Spring Carlisle, one of the largest collector car swap meets in the country. With 8,100 vendor spaces and nearly 100,000 attendees, the event provides a firsthand look at automotive restoration, parts and collectibles.
The Spring Carlisle event runs April 23–27 at the Carlisle Fairgrounds, with the auction scheduled for April 24–25. Proceeds from the pedal car sales will be donated to SUN Technical Institute’s automotive program, courtesy of Carlisle Auctions.
