The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened a preliminary investigation into nearly 878,000 General Motors vehicles after receiving 39 complaints about engines seizing without warning. The affected vehicles are equipped with GM’s L87 V8 engine used in several popular models, including the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500.
According to the NHTSA, complainants reported "no detectability prior to the engine failure," raising concerns about an increased risk of crashes, injuries or property damage.
The agency said the issue stems from a bearing failure, which can cause the engine to seize or result in a connecting rod breaching the engine block.
The investigation covers the 2019-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2021-2024 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2021-2024 Chevrolet Suburban, 2019-2024 GMC Sierra 1500, 2021-2024 GMC Yukon, 2021-2024 GMC Yukon XL, 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade, and 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade ESV.
General Motors, which led U.S. auto sales in 2024 with a 4.3% year-over-year increase, has yet to issue a public statement on the investigation. The Silverado, one of the models under scrutiny, was the second-best-selling vehicle in the U.S. last year.
The NHTSA’s investigation remains in its early stages, and no recalls have been announced. If the agency determines a widespread defect, GM may be required to take corrective action, potentially leading to recalls or service advisories for affected owners.
