Jack Fowler of Mount Vernon, OH, has been named the 2023 Mitchell 1 Automotive Technology Outstanding Student, a recognition that comes with a $2,500 scholarship.

Every year, Mitchell 1 honors a U.S. or Canadian student for their outstanding achievement in automotive technology and auto shop repair scholastics. The scholarship program is administered through the University of the Aftermarket Foundation.

“Mitchell 1 is proud to recognize Jack Fowler for his outstanding achievements and dedication to pursuing a career as a professional service technician,” said Nick DiVerde, senior marketing director, Mitchell 1. “We have full confidence that he will accomplish his goals and thrive in a highly successful career within the auto care industry.”

A recent high school graduate, Fowler will attend the University of Northwestern Ohio in the fall, where he is enrolled in the College of Applied Technologies’ automotive department, and work towards a degree in automotive–high performance technology.

Fowler participated in the 2022 SkillsUSA Automotive Service Technology competition, where he won first place in the Southeast Ohio region and placed seventh in the state. He has earned ASE entry-level certifications in electrical/electronic systems, manual drive train and axles, brakes, engine performance, maintenance and light repair, suspension and steering, automotive service technology, engine repair, automatic transmission and transaxle, heating and air conditioning.

Fowler noted he gained much of his technical knowledge from his father, who owned an automotive machine shop, and his mother, who encouraged him to join clubs such as the 4-H Lego Robotics Club to broaden his experience.

“I’d like to thank both of my parents for supporting my career path,” he said. “My goal is to own a repair shop, and in the future, start a manufacturing operation in the automotive aftermarket industry.”

To be eligible for the Mitchell 1 Automotive Technology Outstanding Student scholarship, applicants must be a current student majoring in automotive technology/auto shop repair course work and meet the following criteria: be nominated by his/her NACAT instructor, maintain a minimum overall 3.0 GPA, have plans to attend (or already be enrolled in) an accredited college or university and be a U.S. or Canadian citizen.
