Hyundai has issued a recall for more than 226,000 vehicles in response to backup camera failures that could lead to violations of federal safety standards. The issue stems from weak solder joints on the printed circuit boards (PCBs) used in the rearview cameras.

Affected models include the 2021-2022 Hyundai Santa Fe, Santa Fe Hybrid, Elantra and Elantra Hybrid, as well as the 2022 Hyundai Elantra N and Santa Fe Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV).

According to Hyundai’s recall documents, solder joints affixing the integrated signal processor to the PCB may have developed cracks during manufacturing, which could progress due to the camera’s high operating temperature. These cracks can cause the rearview camera image to fail, creating a potential hazard for drivers.

The automaker plans to notify affected vehicle owners starting Jan. 19. Hyundai dealerships will replace the faulty rearview cameras at no cost to owners.

A non-functioning backup camera violates federal safety standards. For more information, vehicle owners can contact Hyundai customer service at 855-371-9460 and reference recall number 271.
