Ford has issued a recall for 102,500 vehicles equipped with potentially faulty Nano EcoBoost engines, identified as having intake valves that may crack and break during operation, leading to complete engine failure.

The recall impacts several models, including 2021-2022 Ford Bronco, F-150, Edge, Explorer and Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator models across the U.S. and Canada. The issue stems from the intake valves, which are prone to cracking due to over-specification hardness and grinding burn at critical points.

"A driver may notice the engine running roughly or an engine warning light before the engine loses power," Ford said in a statement. The defect could lead to sudden and unexpected engine failure while driving, dramatically increasing the risk of an accident.

Affected vehicle owners will receive recall letters beginning Oct. 7. Dealerships will then perform an engine cycle test to determine the severity of wear on the intake valves. "For vehicles failing the engine cycle threshold, a comprehensive engine replacement will be mandated," Ford noted.

As of now, Ford has recorded 811 warranty claims and 233 customer complaints globally regarding this issue but has confirmed there have been no crash or injury reports directly linked to it. Vehicle owners can reach out to Ford customer service at 866-436-7332 for further information regarding recall number 24S55.

Ford continues to cooperate with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which had previously expanded an investigation into the Nano EcoBoost engine failures.
