Palm Beach State College (PBSC) in Florida is the recipient of a $4.1 million federal investment to revolutionize its automotive training program by focusing on electric vehicles.
U.S. Rep. Lois Frankel, D-FL, instrumental in securing this funding, visited the college's Lake Worth Beach campus to make the announcement surrounded by students.
The initiative will include the construction of a new 12,000-square-foot facility, replacing the current dental school building, which will be relocated. This modern training center is designed to meet the growing demand for skilled EV mechanics, an industry critical to addressing climate change and reducing carbon emissions. The facility will feature eight mechanics' bays and additional classrooms.
PBSC Associate Dean of Workforce Trade Eligio Marquez said first-year electric auto mechanics can earn between $25 to $30 an hour, significantly higher than traditional mechanics. This wage potential, coupled with the advanced training, positions PBSC graduates for success in a rapidly evolving industry.
The announcement also touched on inclusivity within the automotive industry. Among the students present, Karena Cabus stood out as the lone female automotive student, drawing special praise from Frankel. "We need more ladies in the program," said Frankel, acknowledging Cabus's pioneering spirit in a traditionally male-dominated field.
With only 25 spots available per semester and demand exceeding supply, the new facility will double the college’s capacity, allowing more students to pursue these high-demand roles.
