The National Auto Body Council (NABC) First Responder Emergency Extrication (F.R.E.E.) program recently conducted training events in Guthrie, OK, and Spring, TX, designed to prepare them for the complexities introduced by modern vehicles in rescue scenarios.

Today’s vehicles are equipped with numerous airbags, advanced technology and innovative safety systems that keep drivers safer in case of an accident. But these same safety advantages make it more difficult for first responders to rescue those drivers and passengers. Add to that the potential challenge presented by electric and hybrid engines, and first responders need a whole new arsenal of rescue tools and procedures.

In Oklahoma, more than 30 first responders from Guthrie and nearby areas participated in an NABC F.R.E.E. session held March 29, facilitated by Tim’s Body Worx in partnership with the Guthrie Fire Department and other sponsors.

Participants had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities, using the latest equipment provided by Genesis Rescue Systems. "This is better than watching a video because what you feel in the tool is a lot different," said one of the first responders after the training. "Thank you!"

A spokesperson for Tim’s Body Worx said, “We engage with our community in many ways, but this event allows Tim’s Body Worx a chance to give back to those who are ready to help all residents in Guthrie and surrounding areas.”

On April 5, Houston-area first responders underwent training at Crash Champions’ Spring, TX, location.

“We are proud to partner with the NABC, Allstate Insurance and Genesis Rescue Systems on this vital event that will save lives within our community,” said Matt Ebert, founder and CEO of Crash Champions. “As vehicle capabilities evolve, first responders must have the opportunity to practice the ever-changing techniques for safely extricating those involved in serious car accidents, especially in newer, more technologically advanced models. Crash Champions extends its sincere gratitude to those on the front lines who work tirelessly for those in need, and we hope this event showcases our appreciation and serves as a valuable tool for our local first responders.”

"This training is a vital resource for first responders to provide more comprehensive support to our local communities," said Paul Welborn, assistant chief of operations, Ellington Fire & Emergency Services. “We're grateful to the NABC and Crash Champions for organizing this event, which offers unmatched hands-on exercises that provide our teams with real-world experience and training in new vehicle technologies. This event is making a difference in future rescues and will hopefully help to save more lives from devastating emergencies."

Crash Champions is a Level One partner with the NABC, supporting several of its safety and charity programs nationwide.

Since the NABC F.R.E.E. program's inception, 6,000 first responders across the country have participated.
