First responders in Lafayette, IN, are now better equipped to rescue victims from modern vehicles, thanks to a hands-on demonstration of advanced extrication techniques. More than 50 firefighters from the Lafayette Fire Department and surrounding areas participated in the National Auto Body Council (NABC) First Responder Emergency Education (F.R.E.E.) program May 10, hosted by DeFouw Collision Center.

Today's vehicles, equipped with numerous airbags, advanced technology and innovative safety systems, pose new challenges for emergency responders. The training, conducted by Genesis Rescue Systems, provided critical education on working with high-strength steel, airbags, advanced restraint systems, onboard technology and safety around alternative fuel vehicles.

“The extrication training put on by Genesis Rescue Systems and the DeFouw Collision Center was very informative," said Brian Burge of the Oxford Fire Department. "The overview of electric vehicles and the hands-on training with the Genesis tools made for an impressive learning experience.”

Since its inception, the NABC F.R.E.E. program has trained more than 5,500 first responders, helping them stay prepared to handle the complexities of modern vehicle rescues.

“Having the opportunity to host an event that will benefit not only our first responders but also those victims that are impacted is something of which we are very proud," said Jeff Snethen, manager of DeFouw Collision Center. "The small role we got to play in the further education of our local heroes is a privilege and an honor.”

The vehicles used for the demonstrations were provided by Allstate Insurance and Farmers.
