Yokum’s Toys: Yokum’s Body Shop in CA Collects Toys for Tots

Written by Aura Whittaker, Willits News

The is the first year Yokum’s Body Shop in CA became a registered Toys for Tots collection location, and the community responded by donating loads of toys.

Yokum’s Body Shop has been repairing cars in Willits and the surrounding area since 1985, and this year, the owners decided to show the community how much they appreciate the business. During the month of December, Yokum’s donated a toy to the Toys for Tots program for every car serviced. In addition, the shop established itself as a drop off center for the national toy collection program.

Manager Lorenzo Rodriguez said this is the first year the shop has been a part of Toys for Tots and that shop owner Jeff Yokum came up with the idea as a way to give back to the community.

“There’s been a big push in the community to shop local and support the community with the bypass open. We wanted to do our part,” said Rodriguez. “We just wanted to do something nice for Christmas. We’ve had a good couple of years (in business).”

The toys Yokum’s donated to the Toys for Tots program were purchased locally from JD Redhouse and Ace Copy & Shipping in Willits.

“Our box was overflowing. A lot of people came in and donated (to the Toys for Tots program),” said Rodriguez, who explained that because the toy drive was so successful in its first year the auto repair business plans to make it an annual tradition.

Yokum said he is very proud at how the program turned out and that he got great satisfaction from being able to give back to the people in the community that support his business.

“We wanted to do something to support our local community and decided on Toy for Tots,” said Yokum.

Rodriguez said the toys they collected were picked up the Thursday before Christmas by program organizers and distributed on Christmas Day to children in Willits and throughout Mendocino County. Yokum’s donated any toys received after Thursday, Dec. 22 to the Willits Community Kids Christmas Program run by Willits Wild Bunch and Willits Rotary Club.
