El Paso, TX, police responded to reports of an armed person inside an auto body shop in the Upper Valley.

It was reported around 9:23 a.m. Feb. 15 at the Discount Auto Service & Body Shop at 4900 Doniphan Dr.

Police said an unidentified man drove a vehicle into the business and warned the people inside he was armed. The only threat he made was to himself, said police spokesman Darel Petry.

A veteran police officer was able to convince the man not to harm himself, said Petry.

Police learned that the man was distraught after a loved one had died earlier in the day.

The man surrendered to police around 9:55 a.m., according to Petry.

He said nobody was injured during the incident.

The man was taken in for a medical evaluation.

Police also learned that the man had a vehicle at the shop that had been there for weeks. They said the vehicle had not been repaired even after the man had paid the business a substantial amount of money.

His vehicle was impounded for safekeeping.

An investigation into the man's allegations is underway.
