“There’s a huge difference in repairing a vehicle the way that an insurance company wants to repair it and the way that a manufacturer of that vehicle wants it to be repaired,” Duren said. “So, do we butt heads with insurance companies? Yeah, and the reason we do is that they’re like, ‘Well, this other person down the road will do this.’ I’m like, ‘Well, even though he’ll do that, you’re not supposed to repair this bumper, and here’s a statement from GM right here that says you cannot repair these bumpers.’”

Duren discussed an example of a woman in Florida who had paint and body work done on her car. The body shop she used painted over sensors that notified her if someone was in the lane right beside her. Because the sensors were painted over, she got in the lane beside her, thinking it was clear, and hit a car. She spun around and a semi hit her head-on, killing her.

“We have people’s lives in our hand,” he said. “With the technology these cars have, people trust those sensors, and they have to be functioning.”

Master Body Works is one of only two I-CAR Gold collision repair shops in the Albany area, according to Duren.

“If you’re not an I-CAR-Gold-certified shop, it’s just a matter of time before you make a big mistake,” he said.

And much like they always have, Weiser and Duren said they are focused on continuing to move forward. They admitted they are considering a second location in another part of the region and are trying to improve their system in any way they can.

“There’s always something you could make better, and that’s just the mentality you want to [have],” Duren said.
