Fire at Jersey City Auto Body Shop

Written by Patrick Villanova, The Jersey Journal

Firefighters responded to a fire at a Kennedy Boulevard auto body shop in Jersey City on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016.

Jersey City firefighters responded to a one-alarm fire at a commercial auto body shop on Kennedy Boulevard near Morton Place just after 3:15 p.m. on September 21, Jersey City Spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said.

The fire was reported at Statewide Auto Body Shop at 2188 Kennedy Blvd.

Firefighters encountered heavy fire when they arrived on the scene, and all seven vehicles in the shop were involved and were heavily damaged, Morrill said. There were no injuries and the employees were all able to self-evacuate, she said.

Jersey City arson investigators have charged a 19-year-old man with setting fire to a Wegman Parkway building from which he had recently been evicted, sparking a blaze that destroyed three buildings, injured four firefighters and displaced 20 residents yesterday.

There was a minor extension of the fire to a garage on Morton Place and the auto body shop sustained extensive damage, including a partial roof collapse. The fire, which is under investigation, was brought under control in about a half hour, Morrill added.
