Marathon Petroleum’s St. Paul Park refinery recently committed $40,000 to Project Clean Air Repair (Project CAR), a Minnesota-based initiative aimed at reducing vehicle emissions by offering free emissions control repairs to those in need. The investment will help expand the program’s reach by partnering with additional repair shops in the Twin Cities area.
Project CAR, led by Environmental Initiative, addresses common car emissions issues, such as damaged exhaust systems, by working with local garages to provide repairs at no cost to vehicle owners. The program aims to both reduce harmful emissions and support low-income individuals who rely on their vehicles for daily life.
“Project CAR showcases the strength of community partnerships,” said Bill Droessler, senior partnership director at Environmental Initiative. “When businesses and nonprofits come together, we can find solutions that address community needs while also tackling environmental concerns.”
Since launching in 2017, Project CAR has repaired more than 730 vehicles and reduced emissions by nearly 40 tons. With new funding and increased support from repair shops, the program is poised to expand further, particularly in the East Metro area.
“Investing in Project CAR shows our commitment to supporting programs that truly benefit our community,” said Holly Jackson, general manager of the Marathon Petroleum St. Paul Park refinery. “We believe in initiatives that help local families, and this program makes a real impact while building a healthier future in the place we’re so proud to call home.”
Currently, six auto repair shops in the Twin Cities participate in Project CAR, including The Lift Garage in Minneapolis. Organizers plan to extend partnerships with additional repair facilities to increase accessibility for residents who need emissions repairs.
