Student Engineers at Southwest in TX Rally at Solar Car Race

Southwest High School’s engineering team didn’t enjoy the sunniest start to the recent Solar Car Challenge but it put on a strong rally late in the event.

Car driver Rafael Alvarado, 18, said his group left San Antonio for the competition at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth with an unfinished vehicle. The team ended up missing the first leg of the four-day race — which pitted Southwest against 64 teams from across the nation — because the car’s electrical wiring didn’t pass inspection.
