Elmsford, NY, Shop Fire

More than 100 firefighters from a half-dozen departments knocked down a fire at a car wash and detail shop early Sept. 7 as flames threatened to spread to nearby businesses.

Elmsford Chief David Signor said crews arrived to find "heavy smoke and flames" appeared to be coming from Exclusive Auto Spa at 14 Haven St. around 12:15 a.m.

Firefighters had to punch holes in the metal gates of two loading bays to reach the fire in a rear section of the building.

The two-story cinder-block building, which also houses an auto repair and sanitation company, sits in a low-rise neighborhood of mechanics, scrap yards and trucking companies one block from Interstate 287.

The fire was knocked down within 45 minutes, although firefighters remained at the scene for nearly three hours. There were no injuries.

Signor said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Crews from Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Fairview, Hartsdale, Irvington and Valhalla also responded.
