A fire destroyed a good portion of a Mahopac, NY business Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 15, while causing minor injuries to two firefighters.

The Mahopac Fire Department was called to On the Line Auto Body and Last Chance Automotive at 4 Miller Road at around 1:30 p.m. The businesses are located right on the Mahopac/Somers border, which caused some initial confusion with the dispatcher as both Mahopac and Somers fire departments were summoned.

Mahopac Fire Chief Bill Bahr said that one section of the garage was fully involved when firefighters arrived. He described the property as three buildings that were all connected, and housing two separate businesses—the auto body shop and the mechanic’s shop.

“The middle building was a total loss and was demolished,” he said. “The others have heavy smoke and water damage.”

About 60 firefighters fought the blaze, with Mahopac receiving mutual aid from the Somers, Mahopac Falls, Yorktown, Mohegan, Croton Falls and Carmel fire departments. Kent remained on standby at the Mahopac firehouse.

Firefighters fought the blaze in a steady downpour and quickly got it under control.

“The main body of the fire was knocked down within an hour and then they were just checking for hot spots,” Bahr said.
